How Lane Departure Alert Works

What Lane Departure Alert Does

When you’re travelling at speeds of 32 miles per hour or greater and begin to drift outside your lane markings, Lane Departure Alert draws your attention. It does so with two different methods: an audible alarm inside your Toyota and a visual warning on your instrument cluster.

When you see or hear the alert, it brings your attention back where it should be, the road ahead of you. Once you correct your travel path back between your lane markings, the alert stops.

How It Works

Lane Departure Alert is a safety system that relies on a forward-facing camera mounted by the rearview mirror. The camera detects the yellow or white lane marking lines and coordinates with the two alerts to sound off when you’re deviating from the lane.

You might wonder, “what happens with Lane Departure Alert when I’m changing lanes?” The answer is two-fold. If you’re signaling your lane change, Lane Departure Alert bypasses its warning. But if you forget or neglect to signal your lane change, you’ll hear and see the alert. That said, it’s safest to signal your lane change anyway.
