What Does My Brake Noise Mean?

It doesn’t matter which Toyota model you drive. The Highlander, RAV4, Corolla, Camry, Yaris, even the Prius — they all have brakes that rely on friction to bring you to a stop. Sure, there can be small differences in the style of braking systems, but they’re all fundamentally the same. And with that, brake noise is possible on any vehicle you drive.

You don’t want to be ‘that guy’ — the one driving in stop-and-go traffic, brakes squealing louder than your radio every time you touch the pedal. It’s embarrassing and all the other drivers look to see who the culprit is. You can avoid eye contact, but your brakes will give it away at the next red light.

There are different brake noises, and they can indicate different things. And while this list is not complete, it can give you an indication of your brake condition.

Squealing Brakes When Pressed

When you’re driving on the freeway, you press your Toyota’s brake pedal and there’s an immediate squeal with light pressure, it’s the brake pads contacting your rotors. It can be a normal noise from dust and dirt on your brakes, but if it’s persistent, it could be more. It can also be telling you your brakes are almost worn out and need to be changed.

Grinding Brake Noise

If your brakes grind when you press the pedal, it’s usually not a good sign. That grinding noise is often caused by worn-out brake pads pressing into the rotor when the friction material is all gone. Grinding brake noise is often accompanied by longer stopping distances and preceded by squealing brakes. You’ll likely need new brake pads and rotors.

Brake Squeal when Driving

If your brakes are squealing even when you aren’t pressing the pedal, it could be a bigger problem. It might be a defective wheel bearing or a seized brake caliper. It’s also possible that your brake pads are worn and it’s a early warning tab rubbing on the rotor.

Squeal when Reversing

If you’re backing out of a parking stall or your driveway and your brakes squeal when you press them, it’s typically not a big deal. It’s a normal condition and, though it may be a little louder than you’d like, it won’t cause any problems. As well, it usually only happens the first time you brake on your trip.
