Toyota’s New Risk ATTEND Program

Toyota continues to be an innovator in the automotive industry, and in more ways than you think. Sure, they make high-quality cars and continue to strive for affordability and performance, but Toyota is also a leader in safety.

In fact, the Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC) has done it again and released information about their new Risk ATTEND program that was launched with help from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

What Is the Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC)?

The Collaborative Safety Research Center is Toyota’s answer to the growing epidemic of automotive accidents and distracted driving. It was created in 2011 to advance safety in the automotive industry, not just for Toyota vehicles and clients. Moreover, the CSRC partners with universities, research institutions, and hospitals.

Today, CSRC has completed more than 100 projects with more than 30 institutions. Furthermore, the results from these safety projects are published in academic journals and presented around the world. Therefore, research from the CSRC not only improves Toyota, but it moves the needle for the entire automotive industry.

This shows that Toyota is willing to put safety before profit.

What Is the Risk ATTEND Program?

The Risk ATTEND, or Risk Anticipation Training to Enhance Novice Drivers, program is a partnership between Toyota and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Its purpose is to help teenagers anticipate road hazards to prevent crashes.

Since teenagers are more than three times as likely to get into an accident as adult drivers, Toyota and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst have worked together to create modules that will help teenagers anticipate dangers before they can happen. The primary focus of many of these modules is to prevent distracted driving by helping teens limit distractions on the road.

Unfortunately, the rise of smartphones and vehicles with large touchscreen displays has made it easy to get distracted behind the wheel. Thankfully, Toyota and its partners have started to come up with solutions. Toyota’s dedication to interactive driving education is both noble and efficient, as well as backed by results.

How Does Risk ATTEND Work?

Risk ATTEND is a module that’s used for driving education, so it’s like a defensive driving class. An instructor will have students go through the simulated experiences and ask questions along the way about potential hazards – there can be up to 10 in each module!

The way these modules work is based on students going through a virtual drive. They’re given a scenario and a view from the driver’s seat. From there, they have to look around and click on parts of the screen that may have hazards. For example, if there are hedges at an intersection students should point out that they need to glance over at them before crossing in case of pedestrians they can’t see.
