Where to Find the VIN on Your Car

Ever wondered how your Toyota is different than the one parked next to it? They can be the same year, same model, same color, and the same trim level. From all appearances, they’re identical from the top of the roof to the bottom of the tires. But each car is individual in one aspect especially: the VIN. But to tell the difference between the two, you’ll need to know where to find the VIN.

First, What Is the VIN??

There’s a good chance you’ve heard about the VIN before. It’s an acronym for your car’s very special identifier, known as it’s Vehicle Identification Number. Nearly everything you need to know about your car – whether it’s a Toyota or any other brand – can be determined from its VIN.

A VIN contains a sequence of numbers and letters, each one signifying something very specific. From the country of manufacture and engine code to a check digit, model year, and serial number, it contains it all. But you don’t need to know all that. You should know, though, where to find the VIN.

Where to Find the VIN

The easiest location to find your VIN number is on the dashboard in front of the steering wheel. If you look in the windshield, you’ll see it imprinted at the very bottom. It’s 17 digits long and is unmistakable.
Another good location to find the VIN on your Toyota is on the Federal Safety Certification Label. It’s a white and yellow sticker that you’ll see when you open the driver’s door. It can be placed on either the edge of the door or on the door pillar, between the front and rear doors.

The VIN is also on the engine block, should you need to identify it from under the hood. It can be tricky to find because engine bays tend to be well covered and pretty full, but it’s there.
There are several other potential locations for it including by your spare tire, in your glove box, and on an ID tag on the inner fender under the hood. Or, if you’re not around your car, you’ll find the VIN on your title, dealership service records, and on your bill of sale.
