Your Toyota Might Need a Wheel Alignment

May 12th, 2017 by

Despite your attempts to drive carefully, there’s always something that can go wrong. You might hit a big pothole in the spring and your steering wheel is no longer centered. You could bump a curb when your car slides in the winter, causing a pull to one side or another. You might notice a clunk or a rattle underneath as well. And that means you probably need a wheel alignment.

What Does a Wheel Alignment Do?

Your wheels need to be properly aligned for the best vehicle control. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t mean your wheels are pointed perfectly straight ahead. Properly aligned wheels might be adjusted slightly off of straight, providing better steering feel and control. It also optimizes your vehicle for the best tire wear possible without compromising handling.

Do I Need an Alignment?

Steering Pull

If your steering pulls either to the left or right when you’re driving straight, your Toyota probably needs an alignment. This is often the case after you’ve bumped a curb or hit a big pothole. It’s one common symptom that you need a wheel alignment, although it might be something even simpler. Check your tire pressures as well – if you have a tire low on air, your car might pull in that direction.

Steering Wheel Off Center

If your steering wheel used to be straight across and now it’s on an angle, your Toyota needs a wheel alignment. Your wheels are no longer at the proper angles, usually toed in or out, and the steering wheel indicates the problem. You might have a steering pull at the same time.

If you’ve hit a curb or a big pothole, you may have bent something in the steering or suspension that needs to be fixed first.

Worn Steering or Suspension Parts

You might not notice a specific alignment issue, but if your steering or suspension needs repairs, a wheel alignment is in the cards for your Toyota. Whenever you have steering or suspension work performed, an alignment needs to be done to restore the correct angles and prevent abnormal and premature wear.
